چکیده

§ We have addressed the concern of the panel over whether Trichoplax should be the first lower metazoan sequenced by comparing the case for Trichoplax with that of traditional lower metazoan model organisms. § We have also reworked our discussion of the expected utility of the Trichoplax genome to emphasize those points of immediate utility. § A reevaluation of the existing data on the phylogenetic position of the Trichoplax has been added to a new section called “The Phylogenetic Position of Trichoplax and the Lower Metazoan Alternatives”. § We include our confirmation of the original estimates of the size of the Trichoplax genome to be approximately 50 Mb, the smallest known animal genome. § Finally, we have added our progress in developing this system in the past 3 months, in particular the availability of new clones, the observation of cleaving embryos, and the preparation of a fosmid library.

Placozoa are not derived cnidarians: evidence from molecular morphology.

The phylum Placozoa is represented by a single known species, Trichoplax adhaerens, a tiny marine organism that represents the most simple metazoan bauplan. Because of the latter, placozoans were originally considered the most basal metazoan phylum. A misinterpretation of the life cycle at the turn of the century and some more recent molecular phylogenetic analyses have placed Trichoplax as a d...

Mitochondrial genome of Trichoplax adhaerens supports placozoa as the basal lower metazoan phylum.

Mitochondrial genomes of multicellular animals are typically 15- to 24-kb circular molecules that encode a nearly identical set of 12-14 proteins for oxidative phosphorylation and 24-25 structural RNAs (16S rRNA, 12S rRNA, and tRNAs). These genomes lack significant intragenic spacers and are generally without introns. Here, we report the complete mitochondrial genome sequence of the placozoan T...

Non-coding RNA annotation of the genome of Trichoplax adhaerens

A detailed annotation of non-protein coding RNAs is typically missing in initial releases of newly sequenced genomes. Here we report on a comprehensive ncRNA annotation of the genome of Trichoplax adhaerens, the presumably most basal metazoan whose genome has been published to-date. Since blast identified only a small fraction of the best-conserved ncRNAs--in particular rRNAs, tRNAs and some sn...

Animal Evolution: Trichoplax, Trees, and Taxonomic Turmoil

The genome sequence of Trichoplax adhaerens, the founding member of the enigmatic animal phylum Placozoa, has revealed that a surprising level of genetic complexity underlies its extremely simple body plan, indicating either that placozoans are secondarily simple or that there is an undiscovered morphologically complex life stage.

Trichoplax, the simplest known animal, contains an estrogen-related receptor: Implications for the evolution of vertebrate and invertebrate estrogen receptors

Although, as their names imply, vertebrate and invertebrate estrogen receptors [ERs] and estrogen-related receptors [ERRs] are related transcription factors, their evolutionary relationships to each other are not fully understood. We searched recently sequenced genome of Trichoplax, the simplest known animal, and genomes from three lophotrochozoans: Capitella, a worm, Helobdella robusta, a leec...
